Still-lifes: Sunflowers in Watering Can
Major florals, poetic, expressive, painterly casein paintings. "This is the second of three paintings of sunflowers that begin with them growing in the field before they blossom, and ends with them withered but still beautiful in the studio. Here they are at mid-stage in the studio in a large watering can. They are giant sunflowers that grow eight, ten or more feet tall depending on how they are fertilized, with large flowers perhaps up to a foot in diameter. Here they cluster in various stages of life and leaf. Massed together in looming form, they seem like some unusually expressive entity, a personage." |
